Pushpa 2: The Rule” is a follow-up to the blockbuster 2021 “Pushpa: The Rise” and has Sukumar directing. After that, Allu Arjun's character Pushpa now shakes things up in the red sandalwood smuggling biz in this sequel, which released in theaters in December 2024. The film made big money and packed crowds, but critics and audiences are divided about it.
Movie Synopsis
"Pushpa 2: The Rule" begins where ex- Pushpa Raj left off. As previously described, Pushpa is still trying to gain supremacy over the red sandalwood smuggling business in Andhra Pradesh. While Pushpa extends his territorial power, Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, a determined police offer comes into place, played by Fahadh Faasil. The story is set amidst the sprawling Seshachalam forests, and is a complex tale of power struggle, treachery, and survival.Performances
The heart of the film is kept alive by Allu Arjun’s performance of Pushpa Raj. His interpretation of the character’s raw intensity and style has received applause. Critiques have commented how Arjun’s performance single handedly raises the level of the film, adding depth to the rugged smuggler’s character. Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat was also included alongside Fahadh Faasil, who’s acting was so skilfully nuanced that it provided balance to Arjun’s Pushpa. Rashmika Mandanna as Srivalli gave a strong performance, though some reviews say her character could have used further development.
Direction and Screenplay
Sukumar may be skilled in combat but his direction intertwines with emotional storytelling and action-packed sequences - in his unique style. There are two opinions when it comes to his screenplay. Some appreciate the scope of the film and the well connected multiple subplots, other think that the story becomes too complicated, especially in the latter half. Other than that, the film's pacing remaines a concern, as many viewers find the length of over 3 hours quite excessive.Screenplay and Direction
Despite his combat prowess, Sukumar's distinct style of directing blends action-packed scenes with poignant storytelling. Regarding his screenplay, there are two points of view. While some value the film's breadth and its intricately interwoven multiple plots, others believe the narrative gets overly convoluted, particularly in the second half. Apart from that, the movie's pacing is still an issue because many people think it's too long—more than three hours.
Background score and music
A standout feature of the first film, Devi Sri Prasad's music is still present in the follow-up. Although others may think the score does not hold up to the iconic nature of its predecessor, it nonetheless manages to balance the tone of the film quite nicely. The score enhances the viewing experience of the film by masterfully underscoring its most dramatic moments.
Critical Reception
The reception for the movie has been mixed. Some critics have called it one of those mass entertainers that fulfill all its promises, praising its lead Allu Arjun's cast and the film's production and cinematographic values. For example, the News18 critic Nishad Thaivalappil gave the film top marks, calling it “a raw, wild and action packed extravaganza.” Bollywood Hungama’s Taran Adarsh also praised it as a “wildfire entertainer”, combining “gripping action” with “emotional depth.”
On the other hand, other reviewers have been far harsher. The Week’s Sajin Shrijith described it as “a huge insult to intelligence,” pointing to screenplay and pacing problems. NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee wrote that the movie “goes hell for leather but large parts are crushed under the weight of its own ambition,” implying that the film’s lofty ambitions may have been too much for it to bear.
Audience reaction
mirrors the critical divide. Franchise enthusiasts have appreciated the scope of the film and the performance of Allu Arjun. Others have been echoing criticism of the film's length and narrative coherence. A Reddit user has reported that while they personally enjoyed the movie themselves, they didn't feel there was any particular reason for part three of the film and that it may have been concluded in this one. This mirrors the demand for a tighter narrative arc.
